Manchester's 2020 vision
03 Dec 2012
Your chance to read our new Strategic Plan
The University’s new Strategic Plan, Manchester 2020, is now available to staff, students and stakeholders.
It has the same ambition of our strategic plan founded during the 2004 merger, Manchester 2015 – to be one of the top 25 research universities in the world.
And the three Core Goals – World Class Research, Outstanding Learning and Student Experience, and Social Responsibility – also remain.
However Manchester 2020 tackles issues arising from the changing environment that we now face.
Enabling Strategies
It now identifies eight Enabling Strategies which the University will need to focus on to achieve its ambitions. These are:
- Quality People
- World Class Estate
- Managing Information
- Internationally Competitive Funding
- A Reputation for Excellence
- An International Institution
- Quality Processes
- Environmental Sustainability
Measuring progress
And there is greater focus on a small number of high-level Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) against which the University will be able to measure progress. Targets have been set for all these KPIs and, where possible, targets have been cascaded down throughout the University structure.
Taking action
In her introduction to Manchester 2020, President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell says that while we can rightly be proud of our rich heritage and what we have achieved since the 2004 merger, we are facing a changing environment.
“We need to take action now if the University’s standing and reputation is to be strengthened further,” she explains. “If we are unable to meet these challenges, this will lead to The University of Manchester accepting a role as one of many good, but not truly great, universities in the world.”
