Last chance for students to ‘Tell Us’ about the quality of teaching
14 Dec 2012
Help to maximise the student response rate to the Unit Surveys for Semester 1 before they close on 14 December at 11.59pm.
Between Monday, 3 December and Friday, 14 December, all of our undergraduate and postgraduate taught students are being asked to complete Unit Surveys for each of their taught course units in Semester 1.
You can support the ‘Tell Us’ campaign by:
- Encouraging students whom you teach or come into contact with in other ways to complete the Unit Surveys;
- Displaying posters, flyers and digital images in your part of the University (printed materials are still available from peter.w.morris@manchester.ac.uk).
This year, a £1,000 cash prize will be awarded to the School with the highest overall response rate – to be used to enhance the student experience.
About Unit Surveys
Unit Surveys (formerly called Unit Evaluation Questionnaires) are very short questionnaires, which students are invited to complete twice a year (in Semester 1 and Semester 2) for each of their taught course units.
Most students will take the Unit Surveys online in Blackboard. However, some Schools have chosen to use paper-based surveys, which will be handed out in lectures and seminars.
The surveys are designed to give feedback on the quality of the teaching that our students receive.
They are part of the University’s commitment in ‘Manchester 2020: The Strategic Plan for The University of Manchester' to listening to students and to seeking annual improvements in the quality of the teaching and learning they experience.
How the feedback is used
The Unit Survey process is designed to enhance overall levels of student satisfaction, which will be monitored from year to year.
Results from the surveys are reviewed during the Annual Performance Review of each Faculty.
The process seeks:
- To identify units that achieve high levels of satisfaction so that the staff concerned can be congratulated, and their achievements disseminated for the purposes of enhancement;
- To identify units that achieve low levels of satisfaction and to receive assurance from Faculties and Schools that the causes of dissatisfaction have been identified and are being remedied.
The School of Environment and Development's response to Unit Survey feedback from its students provides a good example of changes that can result from the process: they introduced small group seminars for every option on the Geography programmes, removed groupwork from the third year, and also made a number of minor changes to individual course units.
