Successful day for disability sport in Manchester

Normally rivals on the pitch, the three universities in Greater Manchester came together last weekend with a common goal - to raise awareness about opportunities for disabled students and staff to take part in sport in the city.

The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford launched their campaign with an inclusive Disability Sport Day on Saturday 27 October at the Sport Centre on Peel Park Campus, University of Salford.

Sports providers came from near and far and participants were given the opportunity to have a go at various sports including archery, indoor rowing, fitness circuit, cricket, wheelchair basketball and other activities in the gym and pool. All sessions were led by experienced, qualified coaches and volunteers who specialise in disability sport.

Pauline Lamb attended the event and said "I really enjoyed myself, and the wheelchair basketball was great fun. I also did archery (which I haven't done for 20 years), rowing and had an introduction to the fitness centre.

"I realised that being disabled from a very early age meant that I had never played a team sport before and never attempted to throw a ball at a basket (it showed!). There will be many other people in a similar position."
