Abstract

What are the longer-term dynamics underlying the 2012 outcome and then what therefore does the outcome mean? Emphasis will be on longer-term movements in key determinants such as mood, partisanship, and economic outcomes -- and away from the day to day give and take that dominates most news coverage of elections. Two organizing questions are what the election foretells for future politics and whether or not the winner earned a mandate to act.
