Microsoft’s release of Windows 8

23 Oct 2012

Information and advice for staff wishing to connect Windows 8 devices to the University network or to use Windows 8 on a University-owned computer.

On Friday 26 October, Microsoft will release the new version of their operating system, Windows 8. Staff and students with Windows 8 on personal computers may want to connect to the University's network or may want to connect to University systems from home. In addition, there may be staff who require Windows 8 on a University-owned machine (eg for software testing purposes).

In preparation for Microsoft’s official release, IT Services have conducted testing on the new operating system on the campus network and concluded that it is safe to connect Windows 8 devices to the University network. After Microsoft’s official release, Windows 8 will be available to staff on the Electronic Software Delivery system in order to meet the specific requirements referred to above.

Staff who choose to download and use Windows 8 do so on the understanding that support is not currently available through the University’s IT Service Desk. The only University-supported versions of Windows at present are Windows XP and Windows 7.

Colleagues thinking of buying a new computer for work are advised to buy one that runs Windows 7 to guarantee full support from the University’s IT Service Desk and access to all required applications.

Further information on usage requirements, limitations, details of testing and advice on configuring Windows 8 to work with University services will be available from Monday 29 October at:
