Mindfulness Practice
The University of Manchester Counselling Service has been teaching mindfulness as part of our groupwork programme since 2003.
People find mindfulness training helpful because:
- It helps us to manage everyday life and emotional problems through awareness, which allows us to know more clearly what is happening in and around us in each moment;
- It allows us to respond to difficulties consciously and skilfully, rather than with the automatic habitual responses that often make things worse;
- It allows us to sample a way of being that is freer and less driven by the need to have things be a particular way.
Mindfulness is used in a wide variety of contexts. Increasingly, meditation has established its credentials as a highly effective treatment for a range of anxiety and stress-related conditions, including:
- Generalised anxiety disorder;
- Depression;
- Stress in the workplace.
Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy has been clinically proven to be at least as effective as drugs for depression and it is recommended by the UK’s National Institute of Clinical Excellence.

Mindfulness and Gaia House
The ‘mainstreaming’ of mindfulness owes much to the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programme developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn. The idea for this programme came to him more than thirty years ago when he was on a silent retreat led by Christina Feldman, one of Gaia House’s co-founders, currently one of its guiding teachers and the teacher with whom Jake trained as a meditation teacher. Jake has been teaching meditation retreats at Gaia House and around the UK since 2007.
We are very fortunate to have this link with Jake, who has been leading mindfulness meditation days here in the University for two years. The day is a good opportunity to practise sustained mindfulness meditation supported by an atmosphere of silence. The day is suitable for beginners as well as those with experience of meditation practice. Guidance will be given and there will be talks as well as the opportunity to ask questions.
