Development programme for staff giving non-academic/pastoral support to students

The STDU invites applications for the next cohort of Supporting Students: Staff Development Programme by 2 November.

The sessions will take place at STDU, Humanities Bridgeford Street (9.30am – 4.30pm) on the following dates:

  • Friday 23 November
  • Wednesday 12 December
  • Friday 11 January
  • Monday 4 February
  • Thursday 7 March

Programme information

The programme aims to enable you to develop your own professional practice in relation to supporting and guiding the student experience and to equip you with the professional skills needed to work in a supporting role.

It is aimed at any member of staff who undertakes a role in the non-academic or pastoral support of students. This can be staff in schools or in central support services, supporting students on taught or research based programmes, both undergraduate and postgraduate.

Aims and objectives

To enable you to develop your own professional practice in relation to supporting and guiding the student experience and to equip you with the professional skills needed to work in a supporting role.

By the end of the programme, you will:

  • Be equipped to better understand the student experience and have the skills to enhance it.
  • Have an appreciation of diversity issues and the impact of adhering to guidelines when working with students
  • Know the legal and ethical responsibilities of working with students
  • Understand how your role fits in a changing Higher Education context
  • Be practised in active listening and effective questioning skills
  • Be able to apply structured supporting models to enable positive outcomes for students
  • Appreciate the importance of applying boundaries in a supporting relationship.
  • Hold up to date information about University support services and know when to refer students on.
  • Be enthused about your continuing professional development
