American Mineralogical Society honours Manchester professor

Professor David Vaughan of SEAES has been elected as the 2013 President of the American Mineralogical Society, a rare honour for someone from outside North America.

Uniquely, this follows spells as President of the European Mineralogical Union and the President of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland – a spectacular treble.

David has also been honoured with a large number of fellowships in mineral and geochemical societies across the world and has a mineral named after him - vaughanite being the decidedly dangerous thallium, mercury antimony sulfide.

Professor Vaughan has published over 250 papers in frontline journals and is author of several seminal works including the Mineral Chemistry of Metal Sulfides (with Jim Craig) and Theoretical Geochemistry (with Jack Tossell), as well as Ore Microscopy and Ore Petrography (with Jim Craig), which is accepted worldwide as the top teaching text in the field.

David was appointed to the Chair in Mineralogy at the University in 1988 and has presided over the School of Environmental, Atmospheric and Earth Sciences' continuing international research and teaching in the Mineral Sciences – he was the Principal Investigator of the grant that led to the opening of the Williamson Centre of Molecular Environmental Science in 2002.
