Explore Black History With 8 Lions + An Umbrella
5 September - 24 October 2012

'As part of its newly launched heritage programme, Black Feminists Manchester have invited local historian Dominique Tessier to lead a series of workshops exploring black history from the female perspective.

Open to all, the programme will consist of 8 interactive learning safaris. Using the web, as well as resources from local libraries + archives, you are sure to spot roaming Mancunian lions leading you to significant historical figures + buildings.

Venue: Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre J Floor, Sackville Street Building, Sackville Street Area, University of Manchester, M1 3BU.

Please note: The front entrance of the building is not accessible to the public, please use the Granby Row entrance, take the lift to J Floor and we are in room J8 down the corridor.

More than Reggae And Sport: Jamaica at 50 in the International Arena
17 October 2012

On 17 October, the Centre will be hosting a lecture celebrating the international achievements of Jamaicans. Local historian, Washington Alcott, will focus on Jamaica’s successes in the 50 years since independence - successes that extend past the obvious achievements of Jamaicans in sport, music, and entertainment. Washington will also reflect on the legacy of Marcus Garvey. The talk is appropriate for adults and children aged over seven years. It will start at 6pm and refreshments will be served.

Cilip Training: ‘Recording our Past’ Oral History Day School
7 December 2012

The next day school of CILIP Local Studies Group North West will introduce attendees to the complexities of oral history projects. Topics covered will include the choice of recording equipment, phrasing of questions, examples of successful projects and how to make oral histories accessible in a library setting.

The speakers have a wealth of knowledge and experience and include Stephen Caunce, senior lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of Central Lancashire and author of several articles and books including Oral History and the Local Historian and Amongst Farm Horses; the Horse Lads of East Yorkshire.

Other presenters will be Andrew Schofield from the North West Sound Archive, Jenny Vickers from the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Education Trust and Paul Weatherall from the Manx Museum.

The day school will take place at The University of Manchester on Friday 7 December 2012. Price and room to be confirmed.
