Tours of Alan Turing and Life’s Enigma

From 1951-54 Alan Turing worked on the early computers next door to the Manchester Museum to answer one of the mysteries of biology: how simple balls of living cells develop themselves into complex organisms. The timing of this work is closely connected with his conviction of gross indecency and 'treatment' with female sex hormone pills. The exhibition combines Turing's own notes, museum objects and 50s-inspired exhibition design, and is a celebration of Turing's single contribution to biology.Part ofManchester Pride Festival.

Northern Elements

Manchester based collective Bad Language bring together two well-known writers of poetry and prose to create new work established from content inside the Manchester Museum.

Over the month of August, acclaimed writers Jenn Ashworth and Helen Mort will be working with the Museum to develop new writing based on our displays. On 22 August they will perform these pieces to a live audience in our Living Worlds gallery, as part of an evening of new writing featuring work from emerging writers in the region.

The project has been funded through Arts Council England and ARC as part of their Northern Elements series of events.

Unearthed: Ancient Egypt
Until Friday 31 August, 11am-4pm

Drop-in, free, all ages

Visit our Unearthed: Ancient Egypt exhibition and help our Egyptologist Dr Digby (played on film by Terry Deary, author of Horrible Histories) investigate and record his finds. Create your own archaeological treasures from paper.

  • Monday 13-Friday 17 August (11am-4pm): Make mini ancient Egyptian pyramids to decorate and take home
  • Monday 20-Friday 24 August (11am-4pm): Make an ancient Egyptian Cartouche (name tag)

Manchester Anansi Spider
Wednesday 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 August (1-3pm)

Drop-in, free, 5-11 year olds and their families/carers

Create your own stories by cutting and sticking characters from the original Anansi Spider stories. You can also take a look at the We Face Forward: Anansi Stories display and objects from the Museum’s West African collections.
