The Future of Education

The University recently completed a review of the School of Education.

Following this review, the University’s Senior Leadership Team has supported a  recommendations from the Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities to create a new ‘Manchester Institute of Education’, which will become one of the leading centres of research and postgraduate teaching and training in the world, consistent with The University of Manchester’s Strategic Vision 2020.

To achieve this ambition, the Faculty will invest in strengthening research in Education, will conduct a thorough review to achieve postgraduate provision which is firmly rooted in a vibrant research culture and will continue its strong commitment to high-quality PGCE provision, exploring new models of delivery in a rapidly-changing teacher training environment. There will be no new admissions to any undergraduate programme in Education after the 2012 intake.

The Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities is also recommending that the new Institute will form part of the School of Environment and Development (SED), which will be suitably renamed to take account of the new configuration.

Policy and Resources Committee (PRC), Senate and the Board of Governors will be asked to consider these recommendations when they meet later in 2012.

Over the coming months, The Vice-President and Dean and his colleagues in the Faculty will be working with the senior management teams within both the Schools of Education and Environment and Development to manage the changes. They will also be meeting regularly with staff and students to discuss the timetable and next steps.
