Problems accessing Core Services

A fault on JANET, the national education and research network, is now resolved and services should be running as normal.
Summary:
The University has experienced some problems today following a fault on JANET, the national education and research network. As a result you may have noticed a wide range of problems accessing systems. The fault is now resolved and services should now be running as normal.
Detail:
The University of Manchester, along with other universities from across the North West, has been experiencing some issues since 3:00am today on JANET (a network managed externally, through which our own network connects to the internet). Although the fault was external to the University’s own network, this has impacted on campus as intermittent access problems to a wide range of our core services and to external websites.
We have been working closely with JANET to see appropriate actions taken. As part of that work we have been testing business critical services (including Blackboard, eAssessment clusters, MyManchester) and we are now confident that the fault is resolved and the related problems that you may have experienced should no longer be evident.
This type of problem has proved to be very rare; however, we will continue to monitor the situation closely.
