Colm Tóibín in Conversation with Paul Durcan
01 May 2012
8 May 2012 (6.30pm) at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation.
Acclaimed novelist and journalist Colm Tóibín, Professor of Creative Writing at the Centre for New Writing, hosts the final in his series of high-profile public events. Taking place on Tuesday 8 May 2012 at The International Anthony Burgess Foundation, Professor Tóibín will be in conversation with specially invited guest Paul Durcan.
Like Colm Tóibín, Paul Durcan is one of Ireland’s foremost writers and is renowned as both an outspoken critic of his native country, and as a chronicler of its emergence from the repressions of the 1950s to the contradictions of the present day. Paul Durcan's 22nd collection of poetry is published this month and three poems by Durcan currently feature in the spring issue of the Centre for New Writing’s online journal The Manchester Review.
John McAuliffe, Co-Director at the Centre for New Writing says:
"Colm has been a brilliant teacher at the Centre for New Writing and a terrific advocate for the art of fiction and we’re delighted he’ll be joined for his final event at Manchester by Paul Durcan, a poet justly celebrated for performing his work, and himself an example of how the arts can occupy a public role in contemporary life. It should be an unmissable event."
Will Carr, Deputy Director at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation says:
"We're delighted to welcome Colm Tóibín, Paul Durcan and the Centre for New Writing to the Burgess Foundation. Anthony Burgess, as well as being a novelist and composer, was an expert on Irish literature and also studied English at Manchester University in the 1930s, and so there are lots of links for us. We're really pleased to host this event."
This event will include a Q&A session, allowing members of the public to put their questions and opinions to the panel.
