Politics Professor wins top teaching prize

A Professor of Politics at The University of Manchester was been awarded one of the country’s top teaching prizes.

Andrew Russell picked up the Bernard Crick Prize for outstanding teaching at the Political Studies Association annual Conference.

He received the award from the political journalist, Peter Riddell,  Privy Councillor, Chair of the Institute of Government and member of the Politics and International Studies REF sub-panel.

Professor Russell said: “I was greatly honoured to receive this award from the learned society.

“After all, it is named after one of the discipline's greatest exponents of connecting research and teaching of politics

“Crick was also the architect of the introduction of Citizenship education in the UK.”

The PSA judges said Professor Russell displays a clear commitment to and passion for the teaching and learning of politics.

The citation  said: “The judges are delighted to Award the 2011 PSA Bernard Crick Award for Outstanding Teaching to Professor Andrew Russell of The University of Manchester.

“This submission illustrates Andrew's enthusiasm for the teaching and learning of politics and desire to help every student to achieve their potential.

“Andrew has amassed a significant amount of experience of teaching politics at all levels, to groups of differing sizes and abilities.”
