Life-saving equipment on campus

23 Apr 2012

Information and awareness sessions about locating and using defibrillators.

using a defibrillator

Cardiac arrest has been in the headlines recently with the dramatic on-pitch collapse of Bolton Wanderers footballer Fabrice Muamba.

Fabrice’s experience just goes to highlight that many of us would be unaware of what to do in a similar situation.

The University has invested in a number of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) which are available at various points across the campus.

An AED is a simple piece of equipment which anyone can use to increase the survival chances of someone in cardiac arrest.

Information about the location of the AEDs, and the answers to some frequently asked questions about them, can now be found online at:

If you'd like to see a defibrillator in action, come along to an AED awareness session in May, at which Janet Makin, the University's First Aid Coordinator, will:

  • Talk about the availability of AEDs around the city and on campus;
  • Show a British Heart Foundation video about the use of an AED in a simulated scenario;
  • Demonstrate the use of an AED on a mannequin;
  • Answer your questions.

The awareness sessions will take place as follows:

  • Wednesday 9 May (1-2pm) in Lecture Theatre 1.29, University Place
  • Thursday 10 May (1-2pm) in St Peter's Chaplaincy
  • Friday 11 May (1-2pm) in G.03, Williamson Building

There's no need to book - just turn up on the day.
