The Body Experience
Come on a tour of the human body with scientists from Life Sciences and Human and Medical Sciences at The University of Manchester. Collect your “passport” and travel around the human body. Learn how the brain communicates with all the different organs in your body and how it controls your senses. See how the heart works and how your lungs help you breathe. Explore the wonder of the human spine and perform your very own surgery! Travel through your gut and learn about (and see) the bugs that can infect it. Find out how your body heals wounds and how much skin we shed in a day!
Collect your passport in the reception area.

Mummies in medicine and the imagination
Discover how changing medical practices shaped new ways of thinking about archaeology, mummies and ancient Egypt. From the medical study of human remains came ideas about history and civilisation, while in the public imagination, scientific investigations into mummies inspired dread, horror and fear such as the curse of the mummy. Join local historians for this talk to discover the truth behind the legends of Egyptian mummies. Part of National Science and Engineering Week.

Body Bits: Ethics of Using Biomaterials
Guided tour of the ‘Human Body Trail’ which links Museum exhibits to the themes of biomaterials, enhancement, genethics, and reproduction, followed by discussion on the ethics of donating biomaterials for medical and scientific use.
As part of the Wellcome Trust’s 75th anniversary celebrations, researchers from Manchester and Edinburgh universities worked with Museum staff to devise a trail linking exhibits in The Manchester Museum to their research themes of biomaterials, enhancement, genethics and reproduction.
This event includes a guided tour of part of the ‘Human Body Trail’, including a look behind-the-scenes. This will be followed by discussion – based around the question of whether there is a moral obligation to donate certain kinds of bodily materials (e.g. blood and organs) – and the opportunity to talk to staff and students from the Wellcome Programme on the Human Body: Its Scope, Limits and Future about their research.
Refreshments will be provided part way through.
