University subsidised bike lock scheme

08 Mar 2012

Buy good quality D-locks for only £15 (they usually cost £35 or more).

Representatives of the partnership show off their bike locks

The University has launched a new bike lock scheme to keep bikes safer and promote cycling. The scheme, which is provided by a partnership between Security Services, the Environmental Sustainability Team and the Alumni’s Your Manchester Fund, will enable all current staff and student cyclists to access good quality d-locks for only £15.

Cycle thefts have reduced by 17.5% on the same period last year and it is hoped that bike users will take advantage of the bike lock scheme to support a further reduction in the number of cycle thefts.

You are eligible for the bike lock scheme if:

  • You have had your bike either marked or registered with the University’s Selectamark Security bike marking scheme – over 800 members of staff and students already have;
  • You have had your bike ‘tagged’ with a flyer from Security Services because you are using a poor quality lock (the flyer contains a reference number and details of how to obtain a lock).

There are currently 400 locks available on a first come, first served basis. All money raised will be reinvested in the purchase of new stock.

To buy a lock, go to:

Haven't had your bike marked yet?

You can have your bike marked at regular bike marking events. You'll find details and dates in:

Even if you don't bring your bike onto campus - for example, you might leave it at the rail station - you can still register it. Just pop along (without your bike) to a bike marking event and complete a short form.

Report cycle thefts to University Scurity

In addition to the subsidised lock scheme, victims of cycle theft who report it through the official University channels (call: 0161 306 9966) will be provided with a lock free of charge (subject to availability).
