Manchester Statistical Society: Monthly meetings in 2012

Do you take an interest in current social and economic issues? Do you enjoy lively debate? Do you like to challenge the views of experts?

So do we!

The Manchester Statistical Society was formed in 1833 by a small group of friends who were concerned at the appalling living conditions endured by many people at the time and who believed that the collection of statistics and their discussion was a first step towards social reform.

Nearly 200 years later, we no longer collect statistics but we do still retain a keen interest in social and economic issues and statistics relating to them. At our monthly meetings, which are held from October to March, we invite a speaker distinguished in his or her field to present a paper on a current topic and afterwards members are free to question the speaker or challenge the conclusions reached - this often leads to lively debate! Recent topics have included the rising prison population, care of dementia sufferers, the modern co-operative movement, tackling economic disparities, and reshaping the BBC.
