Hands-on approaches to data gathering – an introduction to Ketso
10 Nov 2011
On Wednesday 16 November 2011 (2-5pm, tea/coffee from 1.30pm) in Room 5.206, University Place.
Ketso is a hands-on kit for effective engagement, developed by Dr. Joanne Tippett from her research at The University of Manchester. Ketso is an ideal tool for managing focus groups and other consultations. It offers a tried-and-tested method that helps participants to express their ideas - even those who find it difficult to talk in front of groups. Using the coloured shapes and tactile tools, participants are able to express their ideas and engage in dialogue, whilst also allowing the researcher to capture data emerging from the discussion.
Ketso is highly portable and can be used just about anywhere - on a tabletop, hung on wall, outdoors in a park - and without the need for batteries and cables. As the data from participants is captured in a physical artefact, it can be transcribed into spreadsheets and later analysed in depth. Ketso has been used in a range of research contexts. It has gathered data from 250 staff in Tesco (from shop floor to senior level); villagers in Peru and environmental managers in South Africa. Ketso has also helped in developing cross-cutting research themes in major EU funded research projects; discussing street tree management and assisted in research with refugees and asylum seekers.
This workshop will introduce Ketso through a series of practical exercises, and will allow participants to explore ways they could use Ketso and other participatory techniques in their research. It will introduce key principles of stakeholder engagement, also of interest to those who wish to engage a wider public in their research.
