Field of genes: DNA testing to find future Olympic champions

Free public event organised by Nowgen on Tuesday 25 October 2011 (6.30–8pm) at the Museum of Science and Industry.

For adults and teenagers 16+.

A new DNA test claims to give individuals information about their athletic strengths. Find out more about this new technology and discuss your views on how these tests should be used. You will hear from experts about DNA testing in sport and then discuss some scenarios to explore your opinions.

  • Have a go at extracting some DNA from your own cheek cells
  • Hear from an Olympic hopeful on what she thinks has led to her success – nature or nurture?
  • Find out more about the ‘Sports X-factor test’ and what it can reveal

Speakers include:

  • Dr Alun Williams – Director of the Sports Genetics Laboratory at Manchester Metropolitan University
  • Rebecca Guy – City of Manchester Aquatics Swim Team, Olympic hopeful
