Whitworth Park community archaeology and history day: Saturday 10 September

08 Sep 2011

Why are people digging in Whitworth Park? What do a bandstand, political rallies and bumble bees have in common?

Whitworth Park postcard

They are all parts of the Whitworth Park community archaeology project where Friends of Whitworth Park, local people, students and experts from the University are researching the social and natural history of the park.

When it was opened in 1890, Whitworth Park was a very different place to today. with a large lake, a bandstand, pavilions, a weather station, elaborate flowerbeds and covered walkways.
