£1M Co-Managed Energy Innovation Fund

Call for expressions of interest for funding for new electricity transmission and distribution innovations.

National Grid, Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution, The University of Manchester Intellectual Property (UMIP) and The UMIP Premier Fund (UPF), managed by MTI Partners, are pleased to announce a £1 million Co-Managed Energy Innovation Fund.

The Co-Managed Energy Innovation Fund has been created to identify and develop novel research and technologies for commercialisation and utilisation by the distribution and transmission industry to improve delivery of electricity to customers.

The Co-Managed Energy Innovation Fund is looking to provide funding, typically up to £100,000, enabling University researchers to undertake one-year projects on innovations to demonstrate proof-of-principle.

Of particular interest to the fund, are projects with applications in the following areas:

  • Building higher capacity and more flexible networks
  • Condition monitoring and asset life extension
  • Smarter system operation and automated management
  • Wide area system monitoring and diagnostics
  • Reducing environmental impact and emissions
  • Improving customer interaction
  • Secure and robust communication systems
  • Advanced materials for power system equipment
  • Circular economy

Application process and key dates:

  • Stage 1: Expression of Interest
    Call now open
    Call Closes: Friday 7 October
     
  • Stage 2: Invitation to prepare a full application in collaboration with UMIP and an Industry Expert
    Opens: Monday 14 November
    Closes: Friday 9 December

Successful projects will commence from February 2012.
