On Monday 12 September 2011 (2-3pm) in the Alan Turing Building, Frank Adams Seminar rooms.
The School of Mathematics is honoured to welcome Professor William Kahan (University of California, Berkeley), who will present a talk entitled "Desperately Needed Remedies for the Undebuggability of Large Floating-Point Computations in Science and Engineering".
View the abstract of the talk.
Professor Kahan is one of the foremost experts on floating point computations. He won the ACM Turing Award (1989) for his fundamental contributions to numerical analysis and, in particular, his work on the IEEE floating point arithmetic standards.
Kahan has dedicated himself to "making the world safe for numerical computations."
