Urban research website launched

A website which brings together University of Manchester research by academic staff and students has been launched this week.

Cities@manchester highlights research from across the arts and humanities, social sciences and the business school.

It also draws on scholars and students involved in international academic, activist and practitioner networks in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.

Cities@manchester contains videos, a news and events section, and a People Directory containing a keyword and specialist city search function.

The new website complements the cities@manchester blog, which has been disseminating researchers’ work and views over the past few months.

Professor Kevin Ward, from the School of Environment and Development, is the current Director of the project.

He said: “This website draws both on the city of Manchester’s unique place at the centre  of industrial capitalism, and its subsequent strategies to set out its post-industrial futures.

“Cities@manchester is committed to an increased understanding of the global urban condition, past, present and future.

“As you might expect from a university of the quality and the size of Manchester, it is home to over one hundred staff producing internationally excellent work on cities.

“It gives graduate students the chance to meet with anthropologists, economists, educationalists, linguists, historians, geographers, sociologists and others from different academic traditions.”
