Froglife Big Saturday on 9 July * We are extInked exhibition – 100 tattoos on 100 ambassadors for endangered species

Big Saturday: Froglife

Water is incredibly important for all sorts of animals and plants, such as frogs and amphibians, and there are loads of things you can do to help the wildlife that depends on water. You could join a Toad Patrol or be careful with your rubbish. Come along and find out more ways of helping this wildlife, see some live animals, meet and listen to talks from experts and take part in art and craft. In partnership with The Froglife Trust, Bolton Museum and The University of Manchester.

Our programme of talks will be:

  • 11.30am-12pm: Aquatic Carnivorous Plants by Christopher Smith & Amanda Bamford. Ages 12+
  • 12-12.30pm: Signal Crayfish by Katy Woodburn. Ages 12+
  • 12.30-1pm: Research with Belize Frogs by Vicky Ogilvy, Froglife. Ages 12+
  • 1-1.30pm: My life with Tortoises – habitat, species, care and health issues by Anne Campbell, Cheshire Tortoise Group (BCG). Ages 12+
  • 1.30-2pm: Bananas about Fish – the affects of farming on tropical aquatic environments and fish populations by Pete Liptrot, Bolton Museum. Ages 12+
  • 2-2.30pm: The amphibians in your garden and things you can do to help by Sam Taylor, Froglife. Ages 7+
  • 2.30-3pm: Toads on roads – native species conservation by John Walker, Froglife. Ages 7+
  • 3-3.30pm: European species of amphibians and their reptile predators by Matt Wilson, The Manchester Museum. Ages 12+
  • 3.30-4pm: The Manchester Museum’s role in Amphibian conservation by Andrew Gray, The Manchester Museum. Ages 12+

Most activities are free and drop-in. Some activities may need to be booked on the day and may cost up to £1.50. All ages

The story of unique arts and ecology project extInked, from its inception in 2009 when 100 drawings of endangered British species were permanently tattooed onto volunteers, to the current work of the 100 resulting ambassadors. In partnership with artist group Ultimate Holding Company. 

In the year that the world celebrated Charles Darwin’s bicentennial birthday, Manchester-based artists Ultimate Holding Company embarked on a once in a lifetime artist-led social experiment. One hundred drawings of endangered British species, created by artist Jai Redman, were permanently tattooed onto volunteers in a continuous three-day public event.

The result of this unique performance was an army of ambassadors for threatened and rare birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, plants and fungi from around the UK. All of the 100 tattooed volunteers had a unique and life changing encounter with contemporary art and ecology, each adopted the role of 'ambassador' for their species, raising money and awareness for the conservation partners and promoting education about changing ecologies and species loss.

ExtInked is in partnership with The Marine Conservation Society, Buglife (The Invertebrate Conservation Trust) and The People’s Trust for Endangered Species, Anatomy Projects and made possible through the financial support of MIRIAD.
