University staff as Governors in local schools: sign up to get involved

Are you a current School or College Governor? Or would you like to consider becoming a volunteer Governor in a local state school? If so, we would like to hear from you.

School Governors’ One Stop Shop

The University of Manchester already boasts one of the UK’s most extensive programmes of work with local state schools and colleges – particularly those in more challenging circumstances – as part of its widening participation and social responsibility goals. 

As a major part of the University’s new Access Agreement with the Office for Fair Access, we have committed to supporting staff to find placements as volunteers in local schools as Governors and providing a network to share such experiences and act as positive ambassadors for the University.

By becoming a governor you will have an opportunity to broaden your skills and development and make an important contribution the development of a school. You may become involved in issues as diverse as site management, marketing, pupil welfare, curriculum development, HR or finance.

Training is offered locally to build personal skills and boost self-confidence. Importantly, volunteer governors do not have to be parents nor do they need first-hand experience of the education.

Considering becoming a Governor?

The University will support staff in finding a placement through a unique partnership with the UK’s leading charity responsible for recruiting and placing governors - School Governors’ One Stop Shop (SGOSS). SGOSS and the University have agreed to share information on University of Manchester staff involvement.
