New take on Tennessee Williams play hits the stage

A radical interpretation of the Tennessee Williams’ masterpiece The Glass Menagerie is being performed at Liverpool's Capstone Theatre.

The Kolectiv Theatre group – Directed by Dr Sasha Dundjerovic from The University of Manchester, uses live music, projection and film to accompany the action on stage.

The play’s treatment is a product of the Senior Lecturer’s research into theatre practice and is designed by Manchester Masters student Abas Aljanbi.

It is is running until 5 March in Liverpool, before touring nationally and internationally- including Iran.

Dr Dundjerovic said: “The Glass Menagerie is a deeply funny and touching ‘memory play’ brimful of untenable desires and fantasies.

“It is Tennessee Williams’ autobiographical account of love and hate in his own family.

“Our reinterpretation of this seminal work demonstrates the emotional power of the piece and its compelling and devastating portrayal of the fragility of human nature.”

Kolectiv Theatre has performed in festivals in Romania, Serbia and Iran and has won awards for best production, actor and director.

In 2009, they were the only British theatre company at the Fajir Festival in Iran, performing The Orchard,  based on Chekov’s The Cherry Orchard. 

They  have also won Best Play and Best Actress at the International Theatre Festival, Serbia.
