Junk the Jargon: Competition for early career researchers

Register as soon as possible for the Faculty heats on 19 January
The ability to talk about research to a non-specialist audience is a vital skill for researchers. Through a competition called Junk the Jargon, the University is challenging its postgraduate research students, research staff and post-docs to present their research in a clear, interesting and entertaining way.
Entrants to the competition are invited, in three minutes, to:
- engage, inspire or challenge their audience
- communicate their research simply and directly
- share their research but avoid the jargon
- show why their research is important and relevant
The following prizes are on offer: 1st £500, 2nd £200, 3rd £100 and the Audience Vote!
Register as soon as possible (see website below for closing dates) for:
Faculty Heats - Wednesday 19 January
- Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences
2-4pm, Renold Building, Lecture Theatre D7 (arrive by 1.45pm)
- Faculty of Life Sciences
10am-12 noon, Smith Lecture Theatre (arrive by 9.45am)
- Faculty of Medical & Human Sciences
2-4pm, Martin Harris Building, John Casken Theatre (arrive by 1.45pm)
- Faculty of Humanities
2-4pm, Samuel Alexander Building, LG Lecture Theatre (arrive by 1.45pm)
Winners and runners-up from each of the Faculty Heats will go through to:
Grand Final - Thursday 10 February, 3.30 - 5pm
Renold Building, Lecture Theatre C16 (see campus map, building 8)
Staff and students from across the University and members of the public are invited to the competition to help judge the Audience Vote.
The Grand Final will be judged by the following external guests:
- Jo Combes, BBC Writersroom
- Marieke Navin, MOSI
- Tiffany Jenkins, Institute of Ideas
