Get your kit off for poverty: Bra recycling scheme

06 Dec 2010

Claim a free coffee for bras handed in at FoodOnCampus outlets during 6-10 December

Want to get something off your chest for charity? Friday 26 November sees the launch of a bra recycling scheme - Get your kit off for poverty - which is being run by a student team from the Manchester Leadership Programme in conjunction with Oxfam and the University’s Waste Co-ordinator, Simon Atkinson.

The aim of the project is to collect one tonne of bras (approx 15,000) for Oxfam. who will then trade them in a sustainable manner to countries where they are a scare commodity as they often do not have the facilities to produce their own.

Bra recycling bins will be at the following locations from Friday 26 November until Friday 10 December:

  • University Place (adjacent to Visitors' Centre)
  • John Rylands University Library (adjacent main desk at foot of the escalator)
  • Students' Union reception (daytime only)
  • Adjacent main reception at Fallowfield residential Campus

In addition, during the week 6-10 December, collection points will be located in selected Food on Campus outlets. If you recycle one or more bras at any of the following locations, you can claim a free hot drink (regular size):

  • University Place Shop
  • Potter's, Simon Building
  • Lime Café, Samuel Alexander Building
  • World Cafe, Harold Hankins Building
  • Rock Café, Renold Building
  • Browsers, Sackville Street Building
