World AIDS Day 2010: Research talk on 1 December

Learn more about the evolution, spread and possible future of the pandemic
On 1 December each year, people worldwide are encouraged to participate in events and fundraising to support those who are affected by HIV and AIDS and also tackle prejudice in this field.
This year, two members of academic staff from the Faculty of Life Sciences will be presenting a glimpse into their research to offer colleagues at the University the opportunity to learn more about the evolution, spread and possible future of the AIDS pandemic:
- Dr John Archer from the Computational and Evolutionary Biology Research Group will discuss the origins and evolution of the virus, as well as present a case study that highlights the difficulties in treating rapidly evolving HIV-1 populations within individual hosts.
- Dr Flurin Condrau from the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine will discuss the history of HIV/AIDS since the 1980s. His main emphasis will be on the framing of disease to understand how social, scientific and cultural aspects are important to understand the relevance of HIV/AIDS and its history.
This event will take place on 1 December at 12.30pm in Lecture Theatre 2, Crawford House.
