Government to consider bid to close Mosley Street Metrolink stop

Comments invited on proposal by 9 February 2011
People are being invited to comment on a proposal to close the Mosley Street Metrolink stop in Manchester city centre.
Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority (GMITA) has asked the Department for Transport for permission to close the stop following a report to the Authority’s Capital Projects Committee earlier this year, which identified operational issues that additional tram traffic from the £1.4bn Metrolink expansion would bring to the city centre, and concluded that:
- If all future services stopped at Mosley Street, trams would “bunch” in the city centre and services across the network would constantly be affected, leading to delays.
- The removal of the stop would offer journey time savings and enable improved pedestrian access to be given to nearby businesses.
Both the St Peter’s Square and Piccadilly Gardens stops were widened and improved last year, so they are already able to accommodate passengers who currently use Mosley Street.
To date, 62 new trams have been ordered to serve the new Metrolink lines currently under construction, which will take the entire fleet to 94 trams.
Representations about the closure proposal should be sent no later than 9 February 2011 to:
- The Department for Transport, RLMP Division, Great Minster House, 76 Marsham St, London, SW1P 4DR
The Department will collate the responses to allow ministers to make a final decision in conjunction with the Office of Rail Regulation.
