Most activities are free and drop-in. Some activities may need to be booked on the day and may cost up to £1.50. All ages.

Tuesday 16 November / 12.45-1.30pm
Chinese movies

Part of our series of talks by The Confucius Institute. At each talk you can learn two Chinese characters and one useful phrase or sentence. Part of our China: Journey to the East exhibition. In this talk Dr Jeesoon Hong (University Lecturer in Chinese Studies, Centre for Chinese Studies, The University of Manchester) will introduce the ways to enjoy the wide range of contemporary Chinese cinema(s) such as the films by Jia Zhangke, Ang Lee, Wong Kar-wai, Jackie Chan, Li Yang, Feng Xiaogang and Zhang Yimou. The list itself brings up a question: how can we define 'Chinese' cinema? This talk will be a mapping of Chinese cinemas which include different filmic conventions, languages, industries, regions and generations. We will discuss the films which have been well received by the western audiences, the box office hits in China and the films that have been acclaimed by critics to see the dynamics of contemporary Chinese cinema. The mapping of Chinese cinemas will help us to understand contemporary Chinese society.

Health Rocks display and wellbeing trail
8 November 2010-1 April 2011
Rocks & Minerals gallery, Floor G

Scientists believe doing five simple things a day can protect our mental wellbeing, just like eating five fruit and veg a day can protect our physical wellbeing. Our Health Rocks display and wellbeing trail shows how the Museum and its collection could contribute to your five a day. The display features handmade books featuring artworks made by participants of the Health Rocks project alongside Museum objects. The project is a collaboration between the Museum and Start (award-winning NHS arts-based mental health service).

Free entry.
