research

The University’s Research Profiling Exercise is about to begin and the input of academic members of staff is required.

This is the second time that the annual Research Profiling Exercise has been conducted. It aims to create an accurate, up-to-date set of research profiles which will be of great value when it comes to developing future research priorities, informing funding decisions and preparing the University for the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework. In the 2009 exercise more than 2000 academic staff (92.4% of those eligible) participated in the review and contribution of data. Full guidance on the 2010 exercise, including the criteria and working methods for each of the assessment panels, can be found at:

The first (pre-assessment) stage of the exercise begins at 12 noon on Monday 15 November 2010 - and involves academic staff (except honorary staff or those with teaching-only contracts) reviewing their own existing research profile and providing text contributions to give more detail about their research activity.

To do this, you should log into the University staff portal, which will enable you to view your own profile:

After logging in you should select the Research Profiling Exercise ‘portlet’. The information that you will see there has been collated from existing University records. You will be able to review:

  • Your research outputs from 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2010 (data derived from Manchester eScholar)
  • Expenditure and academic credit share on research projects for the financial years 2007/8; 2008/9 and 2009/10 (data derived from Oracle Financials)
  • Annual total supervised postgraduate research students and successful completions within the period 2007-2009 (data derived from Campus Solutions)

The portlet will allow you to provide further information to augment your research profile, including evidence of the social and economic impact of your research. You will also be asked to select up to four of your publications for the particular attention of the assessment panel and to provide information on the significance of these outputs and (where co-authored) your individual contribution to them.

If you have any queries regarding the financial or student-related information currently held on then you should contact your local administrative staff in the first instance (you may also have received specific guidance on local arrangements from your school or faculty).

Please note that given the high volume of traffic arising from this exercise, you may encounter some intermittent difficulties in connecting to your portal data. If so, you should initially try refreshing the portal or logging in again a little later. When using eScholar, you may also notice a new look and feel to the interface (v2) which, combined with substantially improved response times, should make the process of adding and managing outputs much more satisfactory.

The portal page will remain open until 12 noon on Monday 31 January 2011, after which no further contributions can be submitted.

The information that you provide will be used by the assessment panels which will meet during February and March 2011. Feedback on the outcomes of the Profiling Exercise will be available to individual members of staff shortly afterwards.

I would like to thank you in advance for contributing to this exercise.
