More than 8000 students get new recycling facilities

The University of Manchester and Manchester City Council have worked together to launch a recycling scheme for students living in University halls of residence.

The scheme sees over 8000 students get brand new recycling facilities which will be placed next to every domestic waste bin to encourage residents to recycle.

The scheme will deliver blue recycling bins for paper, newspapers, magazines, cardboard and drinks cartons and brown recycling bins for glass bottles & jars, food tins, drinks cans, aerosols, plastic bottles and silver foil.

In addition to these recycling bags will be made available for student kitchens to encourage them to take recycling outside to the recycling bins instead of throwing waste into landfill bins.

Al Clark the Environmental Officer for halls of residence at the University said:  “This is a fantastic scheme which will encourage more students to recycle as easily as possible, which will cut down on the amount of waste students produce that is thrown into landfill”.

Andy Turner, waste and recycling Advisor for Manchester City Council said:  “The scheme will help join up recycling services across Manchester and will teach students how to recycle when they move into the wider community.

“Each year in Britain, we throw away 28 million tonnes of rubbish from our homes. This weighs the same as three and a half million double‐decker buses. A queue of buses that long would go around the world one and a half times.”
