*DANA/GENEROSITY The booking charge for these days covers the cost of running the weekend, and the teacher receives no payment. Instead, in the ancient tradition of dana, those who receiving the teachings are given the opportunity to offer a donation to the teacher. Teachers rely partly or wholly for their livelihood on this generosity. It enables teachers to continue teaching, and so also benefits many others.
The weekend is focused on the cultivation of mindfulness. The intention is for us to realise that we are often on "automatic pilot". The danger of living our life on "automatic pilot" is that we will also react automatically, and so be easily caught in unhelpful or destructive emotional and mental patterns. Practising mindfulness teaches us to pay attention in a particular way: “intentionally, in the present moment and without judgment”. This then has the capacity to change the nature of our experience.
The weekend will be two days of sustained mindfulness meditation supported by an atmosphere of silence. The retreat, either for one day or for both days, is suitable for beginners as well as those with experience of meditation practice. Guidance will be given, and there will be talks, as well as the opportunity to ask questions.
Jake Dartington has practised Buddhism meditation since 1995 and trained as a teacher with Christina Feldman. He has been teaching meditation retreats at Gaia House and around the UK since 2007. Jake also teaches religious studies and philosophy at Bilborough College in Nottingham.
