Biomedical Imaging Institute events for June

16 Jun 2010

All welcome to attend

The Biomedical Imaging Institute has two speakers and a symposium planned for June. Details are given below of each event and a link to register. We like to provide a buffet lunch before each event, but need to know how many people will attend.

You can also find further details of events online at:

Monday 21 June 2010: Professor Christian Langton, "Q-BIC Perspectives"
1pm, with lunch served from 12 noon
AV Hill Building, Room 1006

Prof Christian Langton is currently Head of The Physics Discipline within the Faculty of Science and Technology at Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

Prof Langton's talk will provide an overview of current projects with the aim of exploring the potential to establish research collaborations with the BII.

Wednesday 23 June 2010: Dr John Brooke "Computational Steering:comparing simulation with observation"
1.30pm with lunch served from 12.30pm
Room 6.025, 6th floor, University Place

Dr John Brooke currently manages the Research and Development projects at Research Computing Services. From 2001-10 he was Director of e-Science North West (ESNW), which has a particular focus on bio-health applications.

Computational Steering provides a means to interact with, and control, a computational program as it is running on some resource. It represents an alternative method of exploring the response of simulations to changes in their control parameters, compared with the parameter sweep method of launching many computations simultaneously with each one representing a different value of the control parameter.

The work to be presented was developed in the Reality Grid Project, whose main mission was to increase the realism in simulations of condensed matter physics, i.e. to be able to compare the results of the simulations with observations derived from imaging and tomography. There have been several applications of the RealityGrid approach that have used imaging.

Wednesday 30 June 2010: BII Symposium "Imaging research at the pharmaceutical industry-academic interface"
1pm with lunch served from 12 noon
University Place, Room 6.207

This symposium will have four speakers presenting different aspects of working with the pharmaceutical industry on imaging studies within The University of Manchester:

  • Prof John Waterton will talk about the AstraZeneca-University of Manchester Imaging Alliance.
  • Prof Geoff Parker will talk about cancer studies involving pharma.
  • Prof Bill Deakin is involved in a number of studies with P1vital, a Contract Research Organisation who specializes in experimental medicine in neuroscience. Prof Deakin will present information about the studies his group is involved with P1vital.
  • Dr Kevin Craig, Chief Medical Officer with P1vital will present how they aim to ‘bridge the gap’ between academia and pharma.
