Bio-blitz investigates the park/urban environment on 8/9 June
Members of staff at the University are invited to help assess the bio-diversity of Whitworth Park: Bio-blitz starts with an evening of bat and moth hunting on the evening of Tuesday 8 June (8-10pm), followed by a survey of plants, birds, bugs and anything else that moves on Wednesday 9 June (10am-4pm).
The event will be set up at the boundary between the gallery and the park, where tables will be laid out with:
- a range of stuffed birds and animals typical of the park/urban environment
- information for the public about bio-diversity and the work of various agencies
- information on the forthcoming HLF bids for The Whitworth Art Gallery's capital project and the proposed new mammals gallery at The Manchester Museum
Bio-blitz has been organised by Nicola Walker, Head of Collection Care & Technical Services at the Gallery, working with Henry McGhie from the Museum and other specialist staff and students from across the University. Various outside agencies are also involved, including Manchester City Council, Cheshire Wildlife, Groundwork etc.
The event will also involve local school children and any members of the public who drop in. As it coincides with the first day of the Museum's Community Archaeology Project in the park, there's bound to be lots of activity. So do drop by on either 8 or 9 June - and bring your family and friends too!
