New web resource provides guides to key research methods
A valuable new web resource which brings together The University of Manchester’s internationally acclaimed expertise on research methodologies has gone live.
methods@manchester provides introductory guides to key research methods used by researchers in a range of disciplines across the University and is available at:
Researchers from postgraduate level are able to see what methodological work is being carried out as well as find information on courses and lectures.
It will also provides information on what data is available to Manchester researchers, such as international time series data, census data, government surveys and qualitative research resources, as well as an ‘Ask the expert’ facility.
The coordinator of the network – Professor Angela Dale – has set up a series of monthly discussion groups for PhD students on using different methodologies and the ethical problems they might encounter.
Professor Dale, who is based at the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research said: “The University is one of the world’s top institutions for a range of methodologies and we want to highlight this excellence, not just within Manchester but world-wide.
"Examples include Professor Martin Everett’s leading work on Social Network Analysis and Professor Penny Harvey’s renowned expertise on Ethnography.
"Professor Peter Halfpenny is a leading name in e-Research and Professor Jennifer Mason has pioneered Creative Interviewing."
She added: “methods@manchester has been set up to help researchers who would benefit from knowing about these and other methodologies.
