Thomas Laqueur, Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley, is best known for his groundbreaking work in the history of sexuality, which has resulted in two highly acclaimed books, Making Sex: Body and Gender from the Greeks to Freud (Harvard University Press, 1990), and more recently Solitary Sex: A Cultural History of Masturbation (Zone Books, 2003).
A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he was the winner of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation's Distinguished Achievement Award for 2008.
During his visit to Manchester, Professor Laqueur will present work from his current research project, The Work of the Dead.
