Gas mains replacement on Oxford Road

29 Apr 2010

Work will take place from April 2010 for 12 months

The metal gas pipelines which run beneath the streets of Manchester are being replaced over the next 12 months by modern plastic ones.

The North West Gas Alliance has begun working in the Oxford Road area of Manchester and will continue there until April 2011.

The following roads will be affected:

  • Albert Square
  • Mount Street
  • Peter Street
  • Oxford Street/Oxford Road (from St Peter's Square to Hathersage Road)
  • Ackers Street
  • Booth Street West
  • Cavendish Street
  • Higher Ormond Street
  • Lower Ormond Street
  • Charles Street
  • Whitworth Street

Renewing the gas mains will not be an easy job and will cause some inconvenience to travellers. However, once in the ground, the pipes will last at least 80 years and Manchester will have a safe and secure gas supply system.
