Professor Keith Brown is Manchester's new Dean of Humanities

Distinguished historian to head Faculty from September 2010

A distinguished historian has been appointed as the new Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at The University of Manchester.

Professor Keith Brown will head the largest of four Faculties at the University, with 934 academic staff and 16,377 students.

He will start in September 2010, succeeding the current Dean, Professor Alistair Ulph, who announced his retirement last year.

Professor Brown was Deputy Principal and Master of United College at the University of St Andrews - managing the overall academic operation of the University.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

Most recently, he has been engaged in editing a three volume history of the Scottish Parliament and he led a team which in 2007 launched an acclaimed online archive of the proceedings of the original Scottish Parliament from its first surviving act of 1235 to its union with the English Parliament in 1707.

He is currently finishing a book on the early modern Scottish nobility.
