Teaching Enhancement and Student Success

Staff development workshops for academic staff
A University-wide initiative is being launched, funded by Teaching Enhancement and Student Success (TESS) money, which will see the Faculty eLearning teams running a series of staff development workshops for academic staff. The workshops will provide opportunities for staff to learn, with their peers, how to use a variety of eLearning tools and will be supported in both their skills development and in the development of academic content specific to their needs.
The initiative will target the use of online learning tools to impact upon two key areas of the student experience, namely:
- Student engagement
- Assessment and feedback
The workshops are due to begin in April 2010, with further sessions available into the summer, and these will be focused on developments intended to be made available to students in academic year 2010/11.
Staff attending the workshops will be provided with the necessary computer facilities (e.g. laptop/desktop, peripherals or software, or other resources to enhance their teaching up to the value of £1500).
The focus is on providing staff with whatever they need to make full use of our online learning environment and the wide range of associated tools.
How to apply
Places are limited and staff are encouraged to apply early using the application form. Colleagues are also encouraged to contact their eLearning team if they would like to discuss what sort of enhancement project they might undertake, and to receive help with their application.
Applications would be particularly welcome from colleagues with teaching responsibilities for units/programmes with high student numbers, from subject areas with relatively low NSS scores and from teams of staff who teach collaboratively on either units or programmes.
Colleagues wishing to secure these additional resources are required to send the completed application pro-forma to their respective Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning by Friday 26 March at the latest. Queries about this initiative should be directed to Kim Comer, Projects Officer in TLSO (kim.comer@manchester.ac.uk) in the first instance, or the Faculty Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning.
The Associate Deans will select which applications will be supported, based on the strategic fit with each Faculty's/School's teaching and learning priorities.
Following completion of the enhancement project, colleagues will be required to disseminate details about the work and how it has (or will) impact students' academic experience and opportunities.
