Changes coming into effect from 6 April 2010
6 April 2010 is the date for the following changes to retirement ages in the UK.
State pension age
You can currently apply to receive your basic state pension at age 60 for women and at age 65 for men.
From 6 April 2010, state pension age will change to a date between ages 60 and 65 for females born between 6 April 1950 and 5 April 1955, so that by 6 April 2020 state pension age is 65 for all women.
For example:
- If your date of birth is 6 October 1952, your state pension age is 6 May 2015, when you will be age 62 years 7 months;
- If your date of birth is 1 October 1953, your state pension age is 6 March 2017 when you will be age 63 years 5 months and 5 days.

Further rises to state pension age will take effect in 2024.
Employer sponsored pension schemes
The earliest age at which a member of a pension scheme can apply to receive early retirement benefits is increasing from age 50 to age 55 on 6 April 2010.
Remember that University consent is needed for early retirement, so if you
- are considering retiring before 6 April 2010,
- will be under age 55 on 6 April 2010, and
- are a member of USS, UMSS, GMPF or the NHSPS,
before the end of February 2010, please ensure that you have liaised with your line manager and HR to obtain agreement to retirement, and you have notified the Pensions Office.
