Research leadership and responsibilities
28 Jan 2010
Following the recent announcement for the timetable and arrangements relating to the retirement of Professor Gilbert, it has been agreed that Professor Rod Coombs (Vice-President), will take over responsibility for the oversight of the University’s research agenda from Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell. He will combine this with his current responsibility for business relations and for commercialisation of intellectual property. These arrangements will be subject to review when the new President and Vice-Chancellor takes up post.
Professor Coombs will work with the Associate Vice-Presidents – Professors Nigel Vincent, Chris Taylor, and Matt Lambon-Ralph – to co-ordinate research and graduate education issues across the University. Close liaison with the Faculties will be ensured through monthly meetings of the University Research Group, which includes Associate Deans from each Faculty and senior staff from the Research Office and the Business Relations team.
Professor Nalin Thakker has been appointed to the position of Associate Vice-President for Research Integrity and will be responsible for the development of the University research governance framework, best conduct and optimal compliance with regulatory matters. He will, as is appropriate for such a position, report to the Deputy President and Vice-Chancellor rather than to the Vice President for Research.
