Manchester Medical Society 175 Years - A Nobel Celebration

Special symposium with distinguished speakers on 21 October

The Manchester Medical Society's 175th Anniversary occurs in October 2009. The Society has enjoyed a very close relationship with the University. To celebrate this, a special symposium entitled "Manchester Medical Society 175 Years – A Nobel Celebration" will be held on Wednesday 21 October 2009 starting at 2pm in Lecture Theatre 2, Stopford Building.

The symposium will feature a number of distinguished speakers, including:

  • Professor Sir Tim Hunt FRS – Nobel Prize Winner in Physiology/Medicine 2001, who will speak on the Cell Cycle and Cancer.
  • Professor Frank Luyten – Chair, Division of Rheumatology, University of Leuven, Belgium and Co-founder of TiGenix – one of the pioneers of Regenerative Medicine, whose culture autologous chondrocyte product is the first cell based therapy to be centrally approved in Europe under the new advanced therapy medicinal products legislation in June 2009.
  • Professor Lord Robert May FRS – A distinguished population biologist who was until recently President of The Royal Society and Chief Scientific Advisor to Her Majesty’s Government.
  • Professor Marc Feldmann FRS – one of the pioneers of anti-cytokine therapy, particularly the anti-TNFα drugs for Rheumatoid Arthritis, Crohns Disease, Psoriasis, etc.
