Office 2007 now available

03 Sep 2009

Bridging guides and training to assist the transition

From today, Office 2007 is being made available to staff. For the new academic session, Microsoft Office 2007 will replace Office 2003 as the default package in student clusters.

Office 2007 includes updated versions of core applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. It has new features such as the 'Ribbon' and 'Contextual Tabs', designed to improve productivity. Other features include improved security and live preview to make working with documents easier and safer.

Much work has been done over the summer to understand, document and mitigate compatibility issues between Office 2007 and the University's core systems. While some issues remain, in light of the use by students in clusters, it is thought timely to proceed with the rollout to staff.

The IT Services Training Team has produced bridging guides to assist the transition from Office 2003 applications to the 2007 versions. Training is now available through Checkpoint (an online free training resource) and, from October, a range of classroom-based training will be offered.

If you have administrator rights on your PC then you can download Office 2007 through the Electronic Software Distribution service; if not you may submit a request for installation through the IT Service Desk.
