Your guide to saving money on bike purchase

In February, the University introduced its Cycle to Work (C2W) Scheme - part of the Green Travel Plan - which allows you to make significant savings on the purchase of a bike and accessories.

212 members of University staff have signed up to the scheme so far. If you are thinking of joining your colleagues in the cycle lane, you can now download a new information leaflet about C2W, specifically tailored to staff at The University of Manchester, from StaffNet:

The leaflet answers the questions you are most likely to ask about the C2W Scheme and also provides contacts for further information.

Under the C2W Scheme, payments for a bike and accessories are taken out of your gross salary over a 12-month period and, because they are not subject to tax and National Insurance, you will save around 30 per cent.

If you don't relish the idea of pedalling to work, the University is also promoting the use of Zippe scooters, which cost around £900 to buy and then just 0.2 pence per mile to run.

The availability of secure cycle parking shelters has been significantly improved to support these initiatives.

If you would like to cycle to work on two or three days a week, you can use the new flexible parking system for current holders of annual parking permits. This allows you to buy up to seven 21-credit 'hit-cards' a year, giving you access to the car park on an average of three days a week, so that you can mix cycling with driving.
