Debating loss and extinction with Manchester Hermit

Debating worldwide issues around loss and extinction, Manchester Hermit will join experts via a live weblink from his tower on Monday 20 July.

Choosing 40 objects from the Museum's collection, Manchester Hermit Anusman Biswas has released one each day during his residency. Unless we can convince him of their value, he has threatened to destroy all of the objects. Symbolic of species loss and extinction in the natural world, he is provoking us to think about why some objects are saved whilst others are allowed to disappear.

Arguing that extinction is part of evolution and proposing that human intervention has accelerated extinction, this debate will discuss issues relating to value and the sustainability of collecting. The panel of speakers will include Dr Phil Manning, Matthew Cobb and Dr Nick Merriman, with live link-up to the Hermit's tower.
