Altrincham Metrolink line undergoes refurbishment
22 Jun 2009
Replacement bus service throughout August
The Altrincham Metrolink line will be closed during August, to allow connections to be built to new tram lines and for the worn-out overhead power lines to be replaced.
A £3.5M improvement programme will revitalise existing stops on the line as well as making it possible for passengers to use the new routes being built to Chorlton and to MediaCityUK.
Altrincham Interchange will undergo the following improvements:
- a new CCTV system
- better lighting
- improved access for disabled passengers
- new tactile paving
- new drainage
- new litter bins
All local tram stops on the line will receive the following upgrades:
- New platform furniture and signage
- A deep clean for all stops
- Lift refurbishment
Various improvements will also be carried out at individual stops on the line.
The track layout at Cornbrook will be extensively remodelled to accommodate the new MediaCityUK service and to provide greater operational flexibility and service availability.
Metrolink will also introduce its new identity – incorporating the colours yellow and silver – before the first new-look tram arrives later this year.
Replacement bus services will be provided while the line is closed, and a major information campaign will be launched next month to keep passengers up to date.
