MS38: Training Skills for Occasional Trainers course
10 Jun 2009
On 15/16 July at Staff Training and Development Unit
The 'Training Skills for Occasional Trainers' course has been run in various formats since 2005. This year a two-day format with pre-course work is being delivered, on 15 and 16 July 2009.
Aim of the course
The main aim of the two-day trainer training course is to provide an overview of training and instructional issues for people who are required to deliver short training sessions, and want an overview of key topics and an opportunity to practise and be provided with constructive feedback.
Learning objectives
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Explain how to address the various learning styles using different training approaches and techniques
- State their own preferred approach as a trainer and relate this to the delivery of different learning opportunities
- Write behavioural learning objectives appropriate to different learning opportunities
- Design training interventions that take reasonable account of different learning styles and other relevant practical issues
- Determine whether and when specific exercises such as ice-breakers and energisers might be used
- Review and update/enhance any existing training sessions incorporating learning objectives and relevant exercises
- Deliver a short training session to peers
- Identify and explain commonly used training and development terms
Methodology
Pre-course reading and exercises will be sent out to participants, which must be completed prior to the sessions.
Sessions will be a mixture of input from facilitators, group discussions and practical exercises, including the delivery and review of a short training session. The session can be:
- an existing one that is used at work on which the participant wishes to review, updated and receive feedback;
- a new session that the participant has been requested to devise and run for which additional ideas will be generated from the group;
or - a short session on a topic of personal interest to the participant aimed at testing methods and seeking feedback on performance.
